who is harvesting your contacts

Though the most visible action, fighting against ACTA is just one of th attempts to decrease opportunities for somebody else to control our lives. Lately also the news on Twitter "harvesting smartphone contacts" brought up to date the discussion about the "black boxes" - devices surrounding us in the daily life, having features and applications we dont even know.

Russian jokes

Humour of all kinds is playing a major role in recent Russian protests. Some people are making Monty Python-esque banners that seem to have no common sense at all, while others are using recent online mems and old Russian folklore heroes. Sometimes Vladimir Putin accidentally generates mems of his own which then transform into drawings or inscriptions at the meetings. Once he determined the protesters as Bandar Logs which immediately generated jokes about him as Kaa. White paper stripes and unrolled condoms are not that easy to be confused, you know. However, Russian prime minister managed to do it. His vulgar joke generated numerous mems in response. Below are several examples of this brand new ‘protestainment’ trend.

Black March for internet freedom

The blackout of over 7000 popular websites a couple of weeks ago got a lot of media attention and cooperation from several big websites, like Wikipedia, Google,.. The result: PIPA and SOPA are thrown in the waste basket, and most of the former supporters suddenly discovered that they are against PIPA/SOPA. Strange how people can suddenly discover these things about themselves :-)
So it seems this virtual action not only achieved its goals, but achieved it quite well.

But the fight isn't over. PIPA and SOPA weren't the only idiotic and rights-abusing laws the US was trying to force upon us, they were just the most recent and biggest immediate threat.
